William M. Fitzmaurice, a
veteran of World War II, served in the Air Force
and was the recipient of the American Campaign
Medal and Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the
World War II Victory Medal and Ribbon.
Following his discharge from the service, he
began a long career with the State of New Jersey
beginning as an Inspector for the NJ Division of
Motor Vehicle. He was promoted to Sergeant and
then Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant he was placed
in charge of the Trucking, Weights and Measures
Program.
Prior to the Division of
Motor Vehicles being incorporated into the New
Jersey State Police he was promoted to the rank
of Captain. He was then placed in charge of
Logistics and Statistics for the New Jersey
State Police in their Headquarters at Trenton.
During this time, he attended Law Enforcement
programs and classes at Penn State, Rutgers and
Paterson State College. Following Bill’s
retirement from the State of NJ after 28 years
of service (1953 – 1981), he took a position in
the Security Department of Hoffmann-La Roche.
Bill continued his
activities in Law Enforcement by becoming a
Lifetime member of the New Jersey/New York
Detectives Crime Clinic, serving positions as
Secretary, Treasurer and President. He was also
a member of the National Police Defense
Foundation, State Police Fraternal Association,
and Bergen County Chief’s Association. He was
also a member of the NJDMV Target Pistol Team
achieving Second Place in National Competition,
obtaining numerous trophies, and retiring with a
lifetime shooting target average of 297. He was
a member of the Security Council of New Jersey
State, Motor Truck Association and a Judge in
trucking competitions.
Bill was a coach for
Clifton Little League, Baseball and Football
from 1958 to 1970, including State Championship
Bertelli’s Football team. Bill’s hobbies
included fishing, golf, traveling, and he was an
avid reader.
He was a loving and devoted
husband to Louise (Auerbach), and Father to
Kevin Fitzmaurice, and Maureen Concodora and
Son-in Law Clem and Grandfather to Nicole Spahl
and her Husband David, and Renee’ Concodora
